With the modification of the Pioner-UTTH (“Pioneer”) missile system (NATO reporting name is SS-20 mod.1 Saber), the MAZ-547V was made.
This type of missile systems was in service in the Strategic Missile Troops during about fifteen years and was decommissioned in accordance with the Second Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty. However, while it was in service, the invaluable experience in operation of the world’s first mobile strategic ballistic missile systems was accumulated.
Later, this made it possible to succeed in the design of the more powerful mobile missile systems, Topol (“Poplar”; NATO reporting name is SS-25 Sickle) and Topol M (NATO reporting name is SS-27 Sickle B).
